DIGITAL TEXTILE PRINTING
Common Fabric Printing Techniques
1. Block Printing
An ancient method where carved wooden blocks are dipped in dye and pressed onto fabric. Each color in the design requires a separate block. This technique is still practiced in regions like India, known for its rich tradition in block printing.Wikipedia
2. Screen Printing
Involves creating a stencil (or screen) and using it to apply layers of ink on the printing surface. There are two main types:
-
Flatbed Screen Printing: Fabric is laid flat, and screens are applied sequentially.
-
Rotary Screen Printing: Uses cylindrical screens for continuous, high-speed printing, ideal for large-scale production.
3. Roller Printing
Utilizes engraved rollers to transfer dye onto fabric. This method is efficient for producing large quantities of printed textiles with consistent patterns.
4. Digital Textile Printing
Employs inkjet technology to print designs directly onto fabric. It offers high-resolution prints and is suitable for short runs and custom designs. Digital printing is also more environmentally friendly, reducing water and dye waste.
5. Heat Transfer Printing
Involves printing a design onto a special paper and then transferring it onto fabric using heat and pressure. Commonly used for printing on synthetic fabrics like polyester.
6. Discharge Printing
A technique where a chemical agent is applied to dyed fabric to remove (discharge) the dye, creating a lighter pattern on a darker background. This allows for intricate designs with a soft hand feel.
